Perimenopause Got Me Smelling Like WHO?! When Your Body Starts Switching Up the Scent
Updated: 2 hours ago
Underarms, boob sweat, FUPA, and all the places nobody warned us about.

Sis, we need to talk.
You're fresh out of the shower, deodorant on, clothes clean, lotion smelling good. A few hours later, you catch a whiff of something. You do that discreet little underarm check. Suddenly you're looking around like, "Now who in here smells like onions?!"
Plot twist: it's YOU. 😩😂
Before you question your entire hygiene routine, know this: perimenopause may be playing a role. As if the hot flashes, interrupted sleep, disappearing patience, and cycles doing whatever they feel like weren't enough, some of us are discovering our bodies have switched up our signature scent, too.

Welcome to another episode of Nobody Told Me THIS About Perimenopause.
Let's Talk About WHERE the Funk Be Funkin'!
Body odor isn't limited to your underarms, and during perimenopause some of our most overlooked body parts deserve a little extra attention.
Underarms: The Original Suspects
You shower, apply your favorite deodorant, and head out feeling fresh. Then around 2:37 p.m., you raise your arm and wonder if your deodorant quietly resigned without a two-week notice.
Hot flashes, increased sweating, and stress can make underarm odor more noticeable. Bacteria on your skin break down components of sweat, creating that familiar, or suddenly unfamiliar, smell. And that deodorant you've trusted for 15 years? It may be time to renegotiate the relationship.
Under the Girls: The Boob Sweat Situation
Whether yours are sitting pretty or hanging low, they deserve some attention. Bras, especially ones made with less breathable materials, can trap heat and moisture underneath the breasts. When skin stays warm and damp, odor, irritation, and sometimes yeast-related rashes can develop.
So wash underneath the girls, pat the area completely dry, and change out of sweaty bras. And when you're home? LET THE GIRLS HANG! Not because bras are unhealthy, but because damp, compressed skin feels wonderful in the open air. Your breasts have been on duty all day.

The FUPA: That Little Warm Pocket of Business
Yes, we're talking about the FUPA, too! For my sisters carrying a little extra softness in the lower belly, moisture can collect where the skin folds over. And listen, there's nothing wrong with having a FUPA. But that fold needs love, too. Clean the area gently, dry underneath the fold thoroughly, and choose clothing that doesn't keep moisture trapped against your skin.
Between Ya Legs: Thighs, Vulva, and All That Goodness
The inner thighs, groin creases, bikini line, and external genital area get warm and sweaty, especially in fitted leggings, shapewear, or synthetic underwear worn for hours. Moisture plus friction equals irritation.
Some women also notice changes in their usual vulvar or vaginal scent during perimenopause as estrogen fluctuates. But let's be clear: a healthy vagina has a natural scent. It is not supposed to smell like vanilla cupcakes, roses, or a tropical vacation.
The goal isn't to make our bodies scentless. It's to keep our skin comfortable, healthy, and cared for.
Sis, Let Ya Sacred Spaces BREATHE (and Choose Cotton!)
Here's a grown-woman wellness tip that deserves more conversation: when you're home relaxing or getting ready for bed, consider going commando!
Before somebody clutches their pearls, remember that Eve was in the Garden before she ever bit that apple, and I don't recall anybody mentioning a six-pack of cotton draws! 😂
Somewhere between puberty, shapewear, leggings, and the everyday pressure to keep everything tucked, lifted, and concealed, we forgot how good a little unrestricted comfort feels. Your vulva doesn't need to be wrapped in tight fabric around the clock. So when you get home, take off the leggings, slide out of the shapewear, release the girls from bra duty, and throw on a loose cotton nightgown or breathable pajama bottoms.

Going without underwear can reduce friction and trapped moisture for some women, especially overnight. But it isn't required for vaginal health, and it doesn't cleanse or reset anything. Your vagina already has its own remarkable self-maintenance system. We're simply giving the external skin some room after being covered all day. And if commando isn't your thing, that's perfectly fine.
For daytime, here's the real talk: cotton-crotch draws, sis. COTTON! Lace, satin, nylon, and synthetic blends may look beautiful, but some fabrics trap more heat and moisture than others. If you're prone to sweating or irritation, look for underwear with a breathable cotton gusset (the fabric panel in the crotch). And pay attention to fit. If your underwear digs into your groin or leaves deep marks, reconsider the size or style.
Nobody's asking you to break up with your leggings forever. Just don't spend every waking and sleeping hour squeezed into them, and change into something clean, dry, and loose when you've been sweating.
The Science Behind the Scent
Now that we've had our laugh, here's what's happening biologically. During perimenopause, estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, affecting temperature regulation. Hot flashes and night sweats mean more moisture, which gives odor-producing skin bacteria more to work with. Declining estrogen can also affect vaginal tissue, pH, and the vaginal microbiome, potentially changing a woman's familiar scent.
Here's the important part: research directly connecting specific body odor changes to perimenopause is limited, and not every new odor is hormonal. Diet, medications, thyroid conditions, and skin infections can contribute too. That's why body awareness matters more than blaming every unexpected change on menopause.

The Grown-Woman Freshness Routine
We're not trying to smell like flowers 24 hours a day. We're trying to care for our changing bodies without shame.
Wash gently. Underarms, underneath the breasts, lower belly folds, inner thighs, and external groin creases. Skip harsh scrubbing and scented vaginal products.
Dry those folds. Leftover moisture under the breasts, belly, or between skin folds contributes to irritation.
Change damp clothing. Especially after exercise, hot flashes, or a long sweaty day.
Choose breathable underwear. Cotton gussets, comfortable fits, and clean pairs are your friends.
Give yourself freedom at home. Loose clothing, bra-free evenings, and optional commando sleeping.
And please don't put deodorant, essential oils, baking soda, or fragrance sprays directly on your vulva to erase its natural scent. We want healthy skin, not irritated sacred spaces.
When to Get Checked
We're not covering up a skin problem with perfume and calling it wellness. See a healthcare provider if you notice:
Persistent redness, itching, soreness, or a rash in a skin fold (it may be intertrigo, a skin-fold irritation that can involve yeast or bacteria)
A strong fishy odor
Unusual discharge
Burning or itching in the vaginal area
A strong or unusual odor that doesn't go away, especially with any of the above
Our Bodies Are Changing. Our Relationship With Them Can, Too.
For generations, women have been taught to conceal almost everything our bodies naturally do: periods, sweat, body hair, discharge, menopause, even aging itself. We're expected to stay fresh, tight, lifted, and fragrant no matter what our bodies are going through. So when they change in ways we weren't prepared for, we end up embarrassed instead of informed.
The body that carried you through puberty, pregnancies if you've had them, motherhood if you chose it, work, loss, joy, and decades of living deserves understanding. Not ridicule. Not shame.
And definitely not an entire bottle of perfume sprayed between your thighs.
If you've caught yourself doing the underarm sniff test or lifting a boob to check underneath, welcome to the conversation. 😂 You're not dirty. You're not less feminine. And you're certainly not alone.
So tonight, take off that bra if you want to. Slip into something breathable. Let the girls hang. Let ya vulva breathe. And give your grown-woman body the care, comfort, and grace it deserves.

First of let me said thank you sister. Thanks for the talk about been a woman and make it comfortable to talk to you about it
This topic is not talked about enough. Thank you sister for always giving us women a safe space to talk about our vagina and overall health of our pocketbook .
The one thing no one told me about was the changed in our teeth and gums or that itching and feeling of something crawling when there is obviously nothing visible causing either.
I am not having the body odor issues but my skin is always itchy and feels like something is crawling on me when there is obviously nothing there and no rash or bite or anything. I tried all the medicated anti itch lotions with some success, but what worked the best was a DIY oil (coconut oil base, tea tree oil, vanilla oil, and lemon oil or the coconut oil with vanilla and sandalwood extract). I just make it up in a storage container, preferably glass container o…
